FAQ

Q: What is Statcom?

A: STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator, also known as SVG). Sanhe model number is HSVG. It is an important device for Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS), which is the third generation of dynamic VAR compensation device after FC, MCR, and TCR type of SVC (Static VAR Compensator). Its appearance represents the application of most advanced technology for dynamic VAR compensation. It is also known as DSTATCOM when apply in power distribution.

The term "static" is used in comparison to a traditional phase modifier, i.e. our SVG doesn't have any rotating mechanical parts. The word "dynamic" means that SVG itself is automatically adjusted according to the reactive power changes in the system, so that the system is always in an optimal state.

Q: Comparing with other compensator(capacitor bank), what does HSVG have the advantages?

A: SVG is currently the most advanced compensation equipment in the world, with a response time of <5ms and an output of harmonic content is less than 3%, the loss of SVG is lower than 0.8% of the power of the whole machine.No other compensator can realize these features.

SVG  occupies a small space, does not require a lot of capacitors and reactors (occupies about one-third of the area of traditional compensation equipment), is easy to maintain, has low noise, and is easy to expand.

SVG equipment is the modern power electronic device which has IGBT to switch on and off quickly, and control the phase of voltage and current by controlling the modulation wave generated by the system, so that the voltage and current can be controlled. The phase relationship changes to achieve the capacitor and reactor functions. SVG itself is not a linear system and does not conform to the traditional Ohm's law.

Q: What is the function of SVG?

A: We can use the water supply as an analogy to the power supply system.For example: if we want to take a bath, we need cold water and hot water to adjust the water temperature and water pressure.

When we use water temperature and water pressure to throw out two concepts, power factor and voltage. We compare the reactive power in the system to hot water, and the active power to cold water, we can adjust the ratio of reactive power and active power to adjust the power factor of the system, and also adjust the voltage.

Going back to the water supply again, there will be heat loss in the long-distance transmission of hot water. At this time, we will put forward the concept of line loss in power system. The transmission of reactive current on the line will cause line loss. At this time, another concept is mentioned: nearby(local) compensation to reduce line loss. The main function of SVG reactive power compensation is to adjust the power factor, stabilize the voltage, reduce the line loss, and improve the utilization rate of the equipment. In a word, Statcom can save energy, prolong the devices lifetime.
